Professional

I am an engineer/scientist/inventor at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories.

I work in the Internet Systems and Storage Lab on the so-called "100 year archive" problem. I am developing system architectures (people, places, things) that can safely and cheaply store digital assets for 25, 50, or perhaps even 100 years. Some of this work is big picture and some of it is basic science.

Before joining ISSL, I worked in the Consumer Application and Systems Laboratory on systems, applications and business models for synchronous datacasting with broadcast video. Previously, I worked on ensemble computing for individuals. I also collaborated with Berkeley Wireless Research Center for several years on ultra-lower power radio technology and applications.

(Not so much anymore ...) I spend some of my time hacking ARM Linux, blob and uClibc, as we have developed and used several ARM-based devices in our research. Linux (along with uClibc and busybox) has been a natural choice for all but our smallest devices.

Prior to joining HP Labs, I was co-founder and CTO of a start-up named OneSpot. OneSpot offered web-hosted software that made it easy for consultants and their clients to manage projects and project assets. OneSpot was sold off to Hewlett-Packard Company in January 2001.

Prior to founding OneSpot, I held the position of Architect at Cadence Design Systems. I developed advanced system-level design, simulation and analysis technologies for software-hardware co-design. These were embedded in the Virtual Component Co-Design product once offered by Cadence.
